Getting Prepared for the 2023 Hurricane Season

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane season has officially started (as of June 1st) and will run through the end of November. Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are predicting a near-normal hurricane season for 2023. The NOAA is forecasting 12 to 17 named storms, of which 5-9 will become hurricanes, including 1-4 major hurricanes (category 3 or above with winds exceeding 111mph).

Now is the perfect time to create a plan for this year’s hurricane season.

Make A Plan

1. Evaluate the Condition of Your Roofing Portfolio.

If you’re proactive with your roof maintenance, you may have already evaluated the condition of your roofing portfolio with annual spring inspections. For those facility managers and building owners who haven’t, this is where you’re hurricane-preparedness plan should begin.

2. Repair any leaks or Damage That Could Potentially Worsen in the Event of Severe Weather.

It is important to remember that hurricanes, while much larger and catastrophic, are not the only storm systems that produce high-speed winds and large amounts of rainfall that can damage your facility. It’s important to determine the largest risks associated with your portfolio and take action. Making repairs now could prevent major damage in the event of a major storm or hurricane.

3. Pick Up Loose Debris and Trim Trees near Your Facility

The strong winds generated in a hurricane or severe storm can turn loose debris into flying projectiles that can damage your roof. This is why it’s so important to make sure that all loose debris and trash are removed from your roof before hurricane season.

It’s also important to take a walk around your facility and check the trees near your facility. You’ll want to trim any dead, broken, or oversized branches that can easily break off in a powerful storm and land on your facility.

4. Consult with Your Roofing Contractor in Advance of the Storm Season to Confirm Emergency Repair Plans.

The final and ultimately most important part of hurricane preparedness is contacting your preferred roofing contractor and creating a plan for hurricane season.
